Veteran and family-owned Whit-Ash Furnishings ends 52-year legacy
Independent furniture retailer begins total liquidation August 15

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Aug 13, 2024) — After 52 years in business, the veteran and family-owned Whit-Ash Furnishings is set to close its doors forever. The final store liquidation begins August 15, marking the end of a significant chapter in the legacy built by brothers Whitney and Gerry Black.

Whitney and Gerry Black, both Columbia natives and proud veterans, have dedicated their lives to serving their country and community. The brothers, who founded Whit-Ash Furnishings in the early 1970s, are known for their exceptional customer service and strong community ties.

"My brother and I would like to thank all of our wonderful customers for their loyalty and support over the past 52 years. It has been an honor to serve so many families and members of the community in our hometown," said Whitney.

Located at 919 Gervais Street in the heart of Columbia's Vista district, Whit-Ash Furnishings spans 41,000 square feet, offering a vast selection of quality home furnishings and accessories. The going-out-of-business sale, starting August 15, presents a rare opportunity for customers to purchase famous name brands such as Craftmaster, Tempur-Pedic, Leather Italia, Stearns & Foster, Howard Miller, American Drew, and Southern Motion at significant discounts.

The company also features one of the largest selections of floor clocks in the country. Whit-Ash Furnishings is renowned for its impressive rug department, showcasing exquisite rugs from across the globe. These rugs, known for their intricate designs and craftsmanship, can significantly enhance the beauty and aesthetics of any home. Investing in a quality rug is not just about decoration; it adds warmth, character, and value to your living space. Now, with the liquidation prices, customers have a unique opportunity to acquire these beautiful pieces at unparalleled savings.

Whitney Black founded Whit-Ash Furnishings in 1972 after returning from military service in Vietnam, leaving behind a career in professional photography. Gerry joined the business in 1973 after his own military service. Initially operating from a small 1,200-square-foot storefront, the business quickly expanded, moving to 831 Gervais Street and later to its current location to accommodate its growing customer base.

By the late 1970s, Whit-Ash Furnishings had become South Carolina's largest independent furniture store. The brothers’ commitment to a customer-centric approach fueled their success, leading to multiple expansions. Today, Whit-Ash Furnishings remains a beloved fixture in Columbia, known for its wide range of furniture styles, from contemporary to traditional, at competitive prices. The store's convenient location and ample free parking have made it a favorite shopping destination for locals and visitors alike.

As the City of Columbia evolved into a vibrant hub of entertainment, shopping, and dining, Whit-Ash Furnishings maintained its reputation for quality and service. The final liquidation sale is anticipated to draw significant interest, and management encourages early shopping for the best selection.
